The bakery industry in Darjeeling faces substantial challenges in maintaining operational efficiency owing to its distinctive blend of cultural and culinary traditions, mountainous terrain, and environmental considerations. This study investigates the difficulties faced by bakery industry management and evaluates operational efficiency in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal. A sample of 60 bakery managers was selected through convenience sampling, and data were collected using field surveys, direct interviews, and a structured questionnaire. This study identified several critical issues, including production inefficiencies (60% agreement), high employee turnover (60% agreement), slow adaptation to consumer trends (60% agreement), and inadequate supplier management (60% agreement). Significant variations were observed in the perceptions of these challenges based on managers' education levels, experience, and income. To enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness, bakeries in Darjeeling should prioritize streamlining production processes, implementing improved inventory control systems, developing strategies to reduce employee turnover, investing in appropriate technological solutions, and enhancing market research and adaptation to consumer trends. Addressing these operational and managerial challenges is essential to the growth and sustainability of Darjeeling's bakery industry. By focusing on efficiency improvements and strategic adaptations, bakeries can enhance their competitiveness and better serve the unique market demand of this region.
