Unveiling Aranmula Kannadi: A cultural marvel for heritage travellers

Indurajani R and T Rajesh

The Aranmula Kannadi is a renowned traditional mirror from Kerala, valued not only for its distinctive metal alloy but also for the deep cultural meaning it carries. This article places the mirror within its cultural, historical, and spiritual setting, exploring its evolution, the craft behind it, and its continuing role in the social life and rituals of Kerala. The article focuses on the transformation of the mirror while also anchoring it in its craft history, tracing its origins to the temple and its sacred mathematical formula of purity, economy, and identity. This article primarily relies on secondary studies of literature on recent mission studies, as outlined in the literature review, and reflections from oral tradition, as reflected in the mirror. As part of the research process, this personal examination includes the positive role of the Viswakarmas in helping to preserve and maintain the mirror's contemporary value. The article looks to examine the story of the mirror and the changing environment of the artifact inventions. The site identifies some ongoing challenges for cognizant artisans and mirror makers, including, but not limited to, the cost of production and health implications, as well as counterfeits that threaten the integrity of the craft, especially, and the potential diminishment of future opportunities and cultural heritage integrity. To conclude, the article emphasizes that the preservation of the Aranmula Kannadi depends on collective investment in its continued relevance and traditional construction methods, whether in the hands of independent artisans or a cooperative. Preserving it for future generations not only protects a significant portion of our cultural heritage but also contributes to local economies and social welfare.
